Respect Motherhood | For mother and child care

In our religions, mother is the one person who is the most glorified and considered worthy of respect. No doubt, she is created with qualities such as love, sacrifice, forbearance and selfless service to her children but her most appreciable ability of giving birth to a child is a very fortunate thing in itself. This is the most important attribute of a mother. A healthy motherhood is one of the most captivating dream of every woman. But It is unfortunate that in India, every 8 minutes a woman dies during pregnancy & childbirth.

The high number of maternal deaths in some areas of the world reflects inequalities in access to adequate diet, quality health services and highlights the gap between rich and poor.  A poor woman suffers from poverty and the dream of a motherhood does not remain a dream for her but becomes a burden. Some poor people, even after working whole day, are not able to make arrangements for their two-time meal. It is very difficult, infact impossible to imagine a good nutritious diet for the one who is not able to get even two meals a day properly. Health care services are also beyond financial range for such poor people.

Due to lack of nutritious diet and availability of proper health care, lot of complications can arise. Even a women may die as a result of complications during and following pregnancy and childbirth. Most of these complications develop during pregnancy and are preventable or treatable. Other complications may exist before pregnancy but are worsened during pregnancy, especially if not managed as part of the woman’s care. The major complications that account for nearly 75% of all maternal deaths are malnutrition, severe bleeding (mostly bleeding after childbirth), infections (usually after childbirth), high blood pressure during pregnancy (pre-eclampsia and eclampsia), complications from delivery or unsafe abortion.

Most maternal deaths are preventable, as the solutions to prevent or manage complications are well known. All women need access to adequate nutrition, high quality care in pregnancy and after childbirth.

To fulfill the desire of a healthy child, it is very important to consume nutritious food in sufficient quantity during pregnancy. Maternal health and newborn health are closely linked. The development of the fetus depends on the diet of the mother.
A pregnant woman should eat such a diet which can meet the nutritional needs of herself and her unborn baby.

Ensuring that women have availability of adequate nutritious diet and health care services is fundamental for the survival and well-being of mothers and their children. Before pregnancy, women need nutritious and safe diets to establish sufficient reserves for pregnancy. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, energy and nutrient needs increase.
